Gastown and Surroundings

Gastown takes its name from the sailor Jack Deighton (nicknamed gassy) from the Yorkshire region who was the first to open a saloon in 1867 in the place now called Gastown.

It was from this place that the city of Vancouver began to prosper thanks to the sawmills and its port which became an important center for the exchange of goods.

Below I have put two links to Gastown, one for things to do in Gastown, restaurants and other info and the other for history buffs who want to know more.

The steam clock that chimes every hour and emits steam.

The clock was built in 1977 by Raymond Saunders, clockmaker, at the request of local merchants who wanted to have a special monument for their neighborhood.

There are many restaurants and souvenir shops especially around the clock but also native art shops, such as Inuit art or Haida art.

Harbour center is located a few hundred meters west of Gastown between Canada place and Gastown.

To visit, there is the 168m high tower, at the top of this tower, there is an observatory from where you can appreciate all the beauty of Vancouver and its surroundings, especially  the mountains of North Vancouver, Gastown and Stanley Park.

Canada Place

Canada Place is located just west of the Harbor Center, it was built in the shape of a boat for the 1986 World’s Fair.

Inside there is a luxury hotel, the Pan Pacific.

This is also the cruise ship terminal, if you need to take the boat to Alaska this is the place.

Across from Canada Place is the International Convention Center, right next to the famous Olympic torch from the 2010 Winter Games.
